Consolidation Debt Online

When you're struggling with debt, many people are turning to the idea of debt consolidation to help. One issue is that the term consolidation debt, can mean different things. Understanding this, and knowing what you are getting when you find that consolidation debt online company, is important to your success in recovery from debt.

Here you'll find explanations of what debt consolidation really means to you, and you'll learn your options when it comes to consolidating your payments into one.

Consolidation Debt Online – Secured

The idea that comes to mind for most people when talking about consolidation of debt is a consolidation loan. With this type of consolidation all of your debts are paid off with one large loan that reduces your payments and takes care of your current debts. There are a few things you likely didn't know about consolidation loans though, and they are important to understand.

First, almost all consolidation loans are know as secured debt consolidation. Basically this means that the bank (or consolidation company) will hold your house, or other property, as collateral for the loan until it is paid in full. This can make secured consolidation a poor choice for some people.

For those who have a large amount of debts, a consolidation loan may end up lasting for 7 – 10 years. With the simple fact that your home is usually the collateral for these loans, tying your house up for 10 years is a bad idea. There's also the issue of interest with a loan that has a 10 year term (it's huge).

This type of debt consolidation is only a good choice if you can manage to pay the loan off in less than 5 years. Otherwise, unsecured payment consolidation will be a much better option for you.

Consolidation Debt Online – Unsecured

The other type of consolidation, that is becoming increasingly common today, is unsecured, or payment consolidation. With this type of consolidation of debt there is no loan at all. Rather the payments are consolidated into one, and usually you'll be working with a debt counselor to complete your debt relief program.

Unsecured debt consolidation may actually take more than one form. It may be a debt management plan (most suitable for those with less than $10,000 in unsecured debts), or it may take the form of debt negotiation or settlement (suitable if you have more than $10,000 in credit card debts). Which type of consolidation is most appropriate would depend mostly on the amount of debt you have. For most though, the best alternative to a consolidation loan would be debt settlement (also called debt negotiation).

With a debt settlement plan you work with a debt counselor who also works to negotiate down the balances due on your unsecured debts. When the negotiation process is over, you make one payment to the settlement company and they deal with your creditors for you. Since the actual amounts owing are reduced, this is the best alternative to an secured loan.

The program itself will generally be over in half the time, which means faster debt recovery for you. Of course, one of the most important elements here is choosing an unsecured debt consolidation company that has your best interests at heart.
